Lake Wylie – March 4th 2016
The Southeastern Catfish Club hosted its 7th tournament of the 2016-2017 season on Lake Wylie Saturday, March 4th.
Sign up started at 5am sharp, and teams began to file in early as word of the CBC bass tournament might cause a logjam at the boat ramp. We had a total of 32 teams competing for their share of the $3,275 purse! The cold snap dropped the water temperature a few degrees from earlier in the week, and it brought on the big fish bite! Many big fish were brought to the scales including two in the 50s, one in the 40s, 10 in the 30s, and many in the 20s.
Given the blue catfish rule on Lake Wylie, fishing this tournament solo takes some guts, but Kenny Edwards knew exactly what he was doing when he fished it alone and specifically targeted flatheads. He brought 3 giant flatheads to the scales and whooped the field with a 95.04lb stringer. He collected a whopping $1,620 for his 1st place finish. Team Craig finished in 2nd place with a giant 45.39lb blue and a total weight of 87.61lbs and collected $810. Shane Queen and Blake Williams of Team Whiskers were coming into the tournament hot off their win at the Cabelas Super Event on Santee Cooper and finished in 3rd place with a 86.17lb stringer earning $270. Rodney Locklear and Glen Lovin of Team Can’t Get Right had Big Fish of the tournament with a 53.36lb bruiser blue and collected $400. It was the second time this year their team had big fish of the tournament. Not far behind with 2nd Big Fish was Team Razor’s Edge with a massive 51.11lb blue. They earned $175.
The season’s points race is really starting to heat up. Jeff Manning and Michael Paciocco of Team Reelin’ the Blues has a slight lead on the field, but several teams have started to close the gap. With two tournaments remaining in the season, it’s looking like it will come down to the wire.
