Lake Wylie – December 1st, 2018
The Southeastern Catfish Club hosted its 4th tournament of the 2018-2019 season on Lake Wylie Saturday, December 1st, and teams came out in full-force even though forecasts called for lots of rain! It was our first time back to Lake Wylie since September, and based on club feedback, we improved blast-off and eliminated the need for teams going south to travel through the No Wake Zone. Blast-off went as smooth as ever! In the end, we broke the Lake Wylie record for number of teams making it 3 consecutive tournaments with record turnouts. 53 teams and 122 anglers were ready to compete for their share of the $5,320 purse!
Teams who pre-fished throughout the week reported that the bite was as sporadic as the weather. Temps earlier in the week dipped below freezing at night and only reached the mid-40s during the day. By Saturday, it was mid 50s at 5am and didn’t really change throughout the day with little to no wind. However, the rains started mid-morning and didn’t let up for the rest of the day. Teams reported a great bite with lots of quality fish brought to the scales. In the end, Ken Frost and Flathead Bill Sutton of Team Cat Baby brought home their 2nd win of the season with a 74.45lb stringer and collected a whopping $2,620! They also had 2nd Big Fish of the tournament and collected another $280 bringing their total payday to a massive $2,900!
Tournament vets Jeff and Marty Green of Team Reel Time made their season debut finishing in 2nd place with 69.50lbs and collected $1,310. Not far behind in 3rd place were Joey, Terry, and David Osborne of Team Waxhaw Hookers with a 68.20lb stringer giving them a $440 payday. They also had Big Fish of the tournament with a monster 51.25lb bruiser blue and collected another $670 bringing their total earnings to an impressive $1,110. They are the new leaders of the Big Fish of the year race!
Congratulations to Ken Frost and Flathead Bill for their 2nd win of the season and taking over the lead in the Season’s Points Race!
The club is certainly growing by the record number of teams coming out to join the fun, but we should feel most proud of the camaraderie that runs deep through our members. A new tradition continued this month where the winners from the previous tournament gave away a portion of their earnings today. Some have chosen to reward the smallest stringer or the 4th place team. Team Good Times, who won last month’s tournament, rewarded $100 to the Team DC Mudcats for their 4th place finish.
Finally, we would like to give a special Thank You to our sponsors that continually show their support to our club! They make the tournament experience that much more exciting for our members. Jamie Williams with Jamie K Outdoors gave away a $50 gift certificate to Team Drifters for the random draw award and also gave away another $50 gift card to Team Drifting Stix for having the smaller stringer. Lyt “N” Bugg randomly picked the 30th place team giving Team Backland Outdoors $50 of cold, hard cash. They also awarded folks who guessed the closest number of teams predicted and who guessed the closest total with packets of Lyt “N” Buggs. It’s getting very interesting on what and how you can win, so be sure to stick around even though your team had a tough day!
