July 2016 Results
The Southeastern Catfish Club hosted its 2nd tournament of the Slimy Summer Nights series Saturday, July 9th at Lake Wateree. As expected, it was a scorcher! The heat was brutal even as we sat under the pine tree shade at the sign-in table. The field consisted of anglers coming as far as Clemson, SC, Concord, NC, and even Gibson, GA. A lot of familiar faces were not able to attend, but we had many new faces joining us for the first time. All the participants got to check out the new Rage line from Fish Bite Rod Holders and the Big Cat Fever Medium Heavy rod with Eva Foam. Benji Brown provided delicious BBQ, and Pepsi provided ice-cold waters, Gatorades, and sodas. A total of 31 boats and 86 anglers rounded out the field competing for a share of the $3,520 purse!
The pleasure boat traffic wasn’t too bad considering the nice weather. We drew attention from spectators at the state park as we all gathered near the boat ramp awaiting the starting horn. At the strike of 6 bells, the horn blasted, and we were off to the races.
Word around the sign-in table was the bite would be slow, and it was true for most of the teams. However, two teams didn’t have a problem finding the big fish. Dean Birch, Paul Blackwell, and Madison Atkin of Team Fish-On blew away the field with a massive stringer of 126.10lbs and cruised to a 1st place finish collecting $1,740. Their total weight is a new club record and will very difficult to break. They also had Big Fish of the tournament with a 47.3lb blue and collected another $434 bringing their total winnings to $2,174. Benji and Riley Brown of Team Polekat came in 2nd place with an impressive 3 fish stringer of 95.90lbs and collected $870. They had 2nd Big Fish of the tournament and collected another $186 bringing their total winnings to $1056. Brian Snipes and Bubba Branch of Team Tightline had a total weight of 64.15lbs and was good enough for a 3rd place finish for $290
Congratulations to Dean, Paul, and Madison for winning the second tournament of the Southeastern Catfish Club’s summer series! We’d also like to thank all of our sponsors for supporting the club members and providing amazing giveaways at the raffle. We look forward to seeing everyone back as well as new competitors at the next event on Lake Wylie in August!
